History of Polish Oil Industry

1813 - Jozef Hecker experiments with oil distillation and in 1817 delivers products for illumination of the streets in Drohobycz, barracks in Sambor and salt works in Truskawiec.

1853 - The first kerosene lamp is lit by Ignacy Łukasiewiczin the operating theatre in Lvov State Hospital, which marks the birth of Poland'sand world's oil industry.

1854 - Ignacy Łukasiewicz opens the first mine for production of"rock oil" in Bóbrka - today known as the Memorial Museum of Oil Industry. The following year the first successful Oil Company ‘Łukasiewicz-Trzecieski-Klobassa' is established.

1856 - The first crude oil distillery is erected by Ignacy Łukasiewicz in Ulaszowice, near Jasło. Soon after, next distilleries and refineries are being opened: in Klęczany, Polanka,Chorkówka, Ropianka, Libusza and Drohobycz.

1860 - "Franek", one of the first hand-dug oil wells, preserved to this date, is built in Bóbrka. In years 1854-61 over 60 wells were dug at this site, and the deepest one was approximately 150 meters.

1879 - On the initiative of Ignacy Lukasiewicz, the National Petroleum Association is formed.

1883 - William Henry Mac Garvey established the Factory of Drilling Tools and Machinery in Glinik Mariampolski and introduced the percussion drilling method. Simultaneously, rich oil fields are discovered in Węglówka, Grabownica, Wietrznie, Równe, Schodnica and many others in the Carpathian Foothills region.

1886 - opening of the oil refinery in Glinik Mariampolski - the first industrial plant to process crudeoil.

1895 - Carpathian Oil Society of Galicia is established.

1896 - W.H.Mac Garvey discovers one of the largest oil fields in the eastern Galiciaat the depth of approx. 1,000 metres - Borysław and Tustanowice.

1924 - Higher Mining Office is established.

1928-29 - establishment of "Małopolska" oil company in Borysław and geophysical company "Pionier" in Lvov.

1945 - Petroleum Institute in Krosno starts operating, together with the associated OilIndustry School.

1946 - Oil Exploration Company in Kraków starts its operations along with the Geophysics Department in Krosno.

1955 - The Central Petroleum Office is established which is transformed into the Unionof the Oil Industry in 1959.

1955- 1960 - numerous discoveries ofhigh-methane gas fields in the Carpathian Foothills, including the largest one in Przemyśl.

1960 - The Mazovian Refinery and Petrochemical Complex in Płockis built and put into operation.

1961-1965 - first discoveries of oil fields in the Polish Lowlands in Rybaki near Krosno Odrzańskie, marking the beginning of the exploration and production in the region of Western Poland.

1961 - Oil Exploration companies set up in Jasło, Kraków and Piła.

1972 - ‘Kamien Pomorski' oil field is discovered.

1975 - oil refinery is developed in Gdańskand first joint organisation for oil exploration in the Baltic Sea, ‘Petrobaltic', is established.

1993 - discovery of the largest ever oil field in Poland, Barnówko - Mostno - Buszewo in the region of Gorzów Wielkopolski. Production from the field starts in December 1999 as part of one of the most modern crude oil and natural gas fields named ‘Dębno'.

1995- 2000 - discovery of a group of natural gas fields Kościan - Kokorzyn - Brońsko - Reńsko - Wielichowo - Ruchocice - Bonikowo - Racot with recoverable resources of 30 bcm. The exploration near Kościan started in 1999in the Bonikowo field and subsequest fields are connected one by one each year.

2001 - discovery of a new largest oil-bearing region in Poland: near Międzychód.

2002 - production on Kościan and Stężyca fields starts.

2003 - discovery of two new oil fields in Lubiatów and Grotów.
